BEACH WEEK

The St Clair beach and esplanade in Dunedin has long been a favourite for locals and visitors alike with an array of social and recreational activities on offer.  During the summer months there's the crisp and often fierce Pacific Ocean to dip in or for others perhaps the 28 degree scenic saltwater pool at the southern end of the beach would prove to be more accommodating.  Walking,  swimming, surfing - there is plenty of action to be had.

Those with more social purposes in mind find the esplanade area to be home to some of Dunedin’s top cafes and restaurants – each holding a unique sense of identity while embracing the 'beach feel' that lends itself to casual yet quality dining.

For families with younger children the playground conveniently located close to a number of takeaway coffee sources is invaluable,  adding a little seaside therapy into the mix during family time.  Also home to a boutique giftware & design store, an award winning hair salon,  a day spa and a skin health studio – there are many reasons for a visit.

Beach week has been a lot of fun for us as St Clair is a family favourite - whether it's the sun peacefully rising over a subdued ocean at dawn,  fierce winter days with spray shooting skyward as forceful waves ricochet off the seawall or the observation of hardy surfers navigating the twisting seas,  there's always something to enjoy.

The weather and the seascape are continually evolving and these front row seats to the majestic Pacific Ocean lure us back time and again.

The hot salt water pool: The pool had its early beginnings in 1883 when the Caversham council voted to dig out a bathing pool in St Clair which was opened in 1884.   In the 1960’s to 1980’s the pool was concreted with the addition of heating and water treatment.

This was a vast improvement from the previous records that tell of pool users cutting their feet on sharp stones amongst the rocks and horses and carts utilised for the removal of sand from the pool.  Today the salt water pool is a great place to swim with 6 swimming lanes 25 metres in length and a toddler pool,   it is open during the summer months.
